The first sports meet of the future in Fukuoka

About 30 people participated in the athletic hackathon held on Saturday, March 16th, 2019 and Sunday, March 17th, 2019 and came up with ideas. The participants were divided into four teams to come up with new sports events. Then, they came together to try out the activities. During the mid-term presentation, all participants came together to refine the rules of the activities based on the teams’ individual strength for the actual sports meet.

The participants came up with several unique and diverse events. A relay baton race unique to Fukuoka, a gesture-based event using a USB camera, a cheerleading event with a song from a musician from Fukuoka, a wheelchair race, and a gesture miming game. On March 17th afternoon, more than 100 people joined in the festive sports meet and competed in five different events with people they were meeting for the first time.

Over two days, many different people came together to develop new sports activities through the use of technology. Design and sports fused in a way that was beyond what we thought was possible. It made us rethink the concept of a sports meet and provided an opportunity to think of the future society we can develop in regards to design and sports.
