The Catalytic Commoning exhibition: A Cinematic Approach to Architecture and Urban Design

Thursday, November 24 – Saturday, November 26, 2016

From 24~26 November, 2016, a three-day exhibition entitled ‘The Catalytic Commoning: A Cinematic Approach to Architecture and Urban Design’ was held at the International Design Liaison Center (within Tokyo Midtown Design Hub), showcasing the use of film in the architectural design process as explored in theory and practice by Sarah Mills from the School of Art, Architecture and Design at Leeds Beckett University (UK).

The exhibition provided an opportunity to explore the future role of film in architecture and urban design, including a talk session on November 26 about the potential of the cinematic approach, as well as a workshop by Sarah Mills of Leeds Beckett University allowing participants to experience the approach.

Presenters at the talk session included Sarah Mills of Leeds Beckett University, Keiichi Ogata of Cinematic Architecture Tokyo (CAT), Kenichi Tanoue of Kyushu University’s Faculty of Design, Satoshi Anzai of Kyushu Sangyo University, and Minako Ikeda of Kyushu University’s Faculty of Design as moderator.

At the talk session, participants received an explanation of new methods which use film editing to subjectively capture a city for the purposes of architecture. The discussion drew many questions from the audience, with some commenting that this gave them an opportunity to consider new methodology from the relationship between film and architecture.

For the workshop, around ten participants selected potential Catalytic Communing locations from their local areas and used Sarah Mills’ methods to create and present storyboards outlining the changes they would make.
