Online Seminar "Thinking about Design x Business x Intellectual Property" was held

The Faculty of Design, Kyushu University, Kyushu University Business School (QBS), and Robert T. Huang Entrepreneurship Center of Kyushu University (QREC) are working together to develop a new educational program that integrates design and business.

By understanding how design and business are connected, what role intellectual property plays there, and comprehensively grasping design, business, and intellectual property, we can see the reality of business using design.
At the “Thinking about Design x Business x Intellectual Property” online seminar held on July 15, 2021, we invited Yusuke Fujigaya, a designer at Mitsubishi Electric Integrated Design Center, to talk about the current state of design x business x intellectual property from the perspective of an in-house designer.
Mr. Fujigaya is also active as an individual designer. By speaking about design x business x intellectual property from his perspective as an individual designer, we aimed to find a different perspective from that of design x business x intellectual property in companies.

In this seminar, he introduced the multifaceted issues that in-house designers in companies need to consider, such as the need to consider costs comprehensively, needs, trends, regional characteristics, etc., and then incorporate them into the actual design and obtain intellectual property rights, including the surrounding areas. He also shared some examples of how it is practically difficult for individual designers to acquire all intellectual property rights as they create their own designs but are not sure if there is an actual need for them.
Ms. Fujigaya’s experience as an active member of both companies and individuals made it clear that there is a wide range of things to consider in design creation.
