Kyushu University×The University of New South Wales “Joint studio on the city planning of Hakata Bay ”

November 2nd to 20th, 2018

The joint studio on the city planning of Hakata Bay was held for the graduate students from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) and Kyushu University Faculty of Design.

There were 21 graduate students from UNSW, led by Lecturer, Mr Brendan Randles, and 14 graduate students who took “the strategy architect project” and “environment and heritage design” courses from Kyushu University participated in the joint studio. Also, in conjunction with this joint studio, the “Urban Project”, a third-year class at the Department of Environmental Design, was conducted.

November 2nd    Guidance, sight inspection and lecture.
November 3rd     Architectural tour
November 5th     Site survey in the Hakata Bay conducted under the guidance of the Port and Harbor Bureau.
November 6th  Joint design.
November 10th   Mid-term presentation①
November 17th    Mid-term presentation②
November 20th   Final presentation

The first four days of the studio consisted of the lecture by the Mr Nakamura, Director of the Seaport and Airport Bureau of Fukuoka City, and the site survey of Hakata Pier and Hakata Bay, followed by a presentation of the site analysis.

The rest of the time, the students worked in groups to develop their solutions at the Kyushu University, Ohashi Campus. In between, there were two interim presentations with invited lecturers to give comments to the students. The students refined their solutions based on the feedback for the final presentation.

For the final presentation, the judges included Mr Nakamura, Director of the Seaport and Airport Bureau of Fukuoka City and Emeritus Professor Bruce Judd from the University of New South Wales.
