"Beyond Industry 4.0: Digital Fabrication and Local Craft"
November 26th to 29th, 2018
Beyond Industry 4.0: digital fabrication and craft, a Japan-Australia event, was held as a joint project between the Environmental Design Global Hub at Kyushu University and the Faculty of the Built Environment, University of New South Wales (UNSW).
Experts from Japan and Australia researching woodworking, wooden architecture, and digital fabrication were invited to the four-day event. The event has allowed the establishment of the relationship, exchange of opinions, presenting research results and discussion on advanced personal technologies.

On the first day of the event, a public lecture was held at Minami Oguni Town Hall in Kumamoto Prefecture. Assistant Lecturer Yosuke Komiyama from Kyoto University, Koki Akiyoshi from VUILD, and Gabriele Ulacco from AR-MA presented examples of wooden buildings created using digital technology. All the invited speakers also visited local timber industry sites and places such as Fablab Aso Minami Oguni.
On the second day, the symposium “Digital Processes and Craft Traditions” was held at Minami Oguni Town Hall, Kumamoto Prefecture. A study tour was also organized for the guests to view the large scale wooden buildings designed by Mr Shoei Yo in Oguni.
On the third day, a symposium on Education Futures took place at Ohashi Campus, Kyushu University. The speakers for the symposium were Matthias Hank Haeusler and Marjo Niemela from UNSW; So Sugita from Hiroshima Institute of Technology; Kazuhiro Jo and Masakazu Tani from Kyushu University. It was followed by a special lecture by Shoei Yo titled “Non-Architectural Design: Ambient Design Matrix”. Over 100 visitors attended the talk.
On the fourth day, A talk event, Digital + Material, was held at MTRL KYOTO in FabCafe Kyoto, with Marjo Niemela and Tracey Huang from UNSW; a carpenter Soichi Adachi; and Asami Kubota.
