Kyushu University Faculty of Design • Promotional Film Production Project

Dcember 1th, 2018 - July 30, 2019

Nowadays, the concept of design has shown signs of expanding from the expressive form of objects and products to ways of thinking. At the Kyushu University Faculty of Design, we have continued to evolve as an organization that can flexibly adapt and innovate in response with the changing of the times. In the quest to continue to be a central global hub of design education and research, to communicate such visions and new academic curriculums to future generations, this project to produce a promotional film was launched in December of 2018, timed to integrate with the scheduled reorganization of the academic department in 2020.

This promotional film will introduce viewers to the educational and research facilities, research equipment, and academic curriculums. We embarked on this 8-month project to produce a film that would “sincerely and truthfully communicate the university experience”, “convey our tradition”, and provide “hope and anticipation for the future”. The full cooperation of the faculty members and students would be necessary for filming this project. Hence, a production team was formed, consisted of our students (who know our university best), the film production company MontBlanc Pictures Co., Ltd. (run by a graduate of our university), and the Director of the Office of Strategic Initiatives and Projects at the Kyushu University Faculty of Design (to serve a coordinating, planning, and management role).

The production process first involved shooting 200 to 300 scenes at various locations on campus, followed by selecting and editing cuts that would best communicate the appeals of the Faculty of Design. During the shoot, the crew was able to amass a large amount of precious footage. For example, instructors writing down mathematical formulas about the sound on a whiteboard during their lecture (with the presence of the cameras never interrupting the work of the faculty), a rare opportunity to see vintage silkscreen equipment, motion capture work, acoustic chambers, etc. The participating students seemed to enjoy the experience of filming, and it provided them with a chance to experience the diversity and thrill of working in the Faculty of Design.

With detailed attention paid to the BGM soundtrack and texture of the film, the resulting work was genuinely worthy of communicating the diverse technology and fascinating qualities of the Faculty of Design to the world. The team hopes that this film will provide viewers with the interest and spark that may inspire them to study at the Faculty of Design and to collaborate with us on a future educational and research project.
