The 3rd Design x Business x Entrepreneurship Seminar: The "Evolutionary Thinking" to Realize Social Issues (WHY) and Innovation (HOW)

December 16th, 2019

Kyushu University Faculty of Design, Business School (QBS), and Robert T. Huang Entrepreneurship Center (QREC) organized the 3rd Seminar of Design x Business x Entrepreneurship. We invited Professor Eisuke Tachikawa, founder and representative of NOSIGNER, to discuss social issues (WHY) and innovation (HOW) realized through “Evolutionary Thinking'”. We have about 65 participants from within and outside the school. Associate Professor Satoru Tokuhisa of the Kyushu University Faculty of Design will tell you more about the day.

Professor Eisuke Tachikawa majored in architecture at the Faculty of Science and Technology of Keio University. Constructing his theories of design from the perspectives of form (how) and relationships (why), he engages in a variety of design projects.

At the start of the seminar, four topics from participants were selected:
● Why: How deeply should you explore social issues while talking with clients?
● Why: Ways to resolve issues
● How: How to bring out the individuality in your business model?
● What: How to design a digital city hall?

In the talk, Professor Tachikawa introduced his viewpoints on design and his methodology of evolutionary thinking and responded to the above topics. His evolutionary thinking methodology consists of four relationships and eight mutations:

● Relationship 01 Dissection: Once dissected, confirm the role of all shapes
● Relationship 02 Ecosystem: Consider all actors in the ecosystem
● Relationship 03 Phylogenetic Tree: Knowing precedents and objectives by writing evolutionary diagrams
● Relationship 04 Future Prediction: Thinking through Forecasting and Backcasting

● Mutation 01 Deletion: Deletion of elements
● Mutation 02 Fusion: Fusion of concepts
● Mutation 03 Substitution: Swapping
● Mutation 04 Assimilation: Imitate, blend into
● Mutation 05 Transfer: Move, change location
● Mutation 06 Deformation/Transformation/ Sharpening: Size, form, color
● Mutation 07 Inversion: Mirror image/reversal
● Mutation 08 Organization: Grouping/Aggregation

In the Q & A session following the presentation, there were many questions, and the seminar was exciting. The questions include how Professor Tachikawa thinks about the relationship between ethics and design, the limitations of evolutionary thinking and any cases that did not work well.
