International Symposium on Quality Assurance in Design Education

On October 21st (Saturday), 2017 our graduate school and the future design learning center held an “international symposium on quality assurance in design education at the Denki Building for Joint Development (Chuo district of Fukuoka).
There was a reconsideration of the methodology and concepts used in actual design education settings with regards to the rapidly expanding design concepts that continue to qualitatively change and the social needs and expectations put on design. This reconsideration centrally focused on this university, and it was done with the objective of exploring the future of these things.
In session 01, there was a keynote speech by President Tani of the Graduate School of Design, Professor Kun-pyo Lee of KAIST, and President Nagasawa of Musahino Art University. The theme of this speech was “perspectives for considering the quality of design education,” and it discussed a vision of the future of design education and what will be looked for in designers going forward.
The theme of session 02 was a “framework for design education,” and in this session each university’s challenging initiatives were introduced by teaching staff from Singapore National University and Tsinghua University. Then, in the afternoon session 03, there were reports from teaching staff from altogether 7 universities like Dalian University of Technology about educational practices for the future currently being practiced by each of these universities. After tht, there was an exchange of ideas with the participants.
In session 04, there was a lively debate about what is important and what should be accomplished in the future of design education, and this debate was held between the teaching staff from the 4 universities who were the speakers and the participants. It became a setting to pose a variety of questions about the future of design education.
