K2 Fab Studio "TRANS-FABRICATION" Urban Furniture for the Future City

After going through a prototyping phase involving field research for urban and traditional architecture in Korea and connecting Japan and Korea through digital fabrication and video conferencing systems, the program went on to design “Urban Furniture for the Future City.” An experimental international course was held where design layout data was shared through the internet and brought to life through remote collaboration.
Eight students from idKAIST and eight students from the Kyushu University Graduate School of Design participated in the course.

In Part 1, a lecture was held covering field research in the rapidly developing Euljiro district of Seoul, South Korea and the Gongju Hanok Village with its traditional Korean architecture, as well as urban design, architecture, and digital fabrication.
Students were divided into groups to perform analysis, concept-making, and ideation for the research, and the outcome of Part 1 included a poster summarizing the program’s concepts and a mid-term presentation.
The course was conducted completely in English, and participants included a diverse group of students from Japan, South Korea, France, and Costa Rica.

In January 2018, Part 2 was carried out by prototyping remotely, with teams split up between Japan and Korea.
1/1 scale “Urban Furniture” was manufactured using digital fabrication and honeycomb cardboard as this part’s final proposal.
Finally, both teams were brought together over the internet to perform presentations and receive critiques.
The course brought together students with a diversity of specialties and backgrounds to work together to perform discussion and craftsmanship through international group work.

This program was carried out as a part of the Asia-based design lab known as K2, which is operated in cooperation between the Kyushu University Faculty of Design and idKAIST.
