Introducing Shopbot's CNC into the Construction Workshop, School of Design

September 20th, 2019 - October 10th, 2019

Shopbot’s CNC (computer numerical control) processing machine, which had been newly introduced to the workshop at the School of Design, Kyushu University, is now in full-scale operation and has greatly simplified the cutting of flat materials with CAD. This has smoothed the series of processes involved in the creation of works—design, processing, verification, and correction—inspiring positive expectations for the promotion of student production and research in a way unseen in the past.

Using CNC, we also worked on a project with the Department of Architecture, School of Engineering, Kyushu University. The outcomes of the project were installed in Suijo Park in the Tenjin area of Fukuoka Prefecture in early October 2019. Architecture students created production drawings using CAD software, then took the data to the workshop in the School of Design, where they cut the boards using Shopbot’s CNC. This enabled them to complete the structures shown in the photographs in a short time.

This is a commentary by a student who was involved in the project.

We created various kinds of street furniture to support the daily use of public space using Shopbot’s CNC and installed the pieces experimentally in Suijo Park and Tenjin Central Park in Fukuoka. To facilitate the installation in terms of tidying up and moving pieces around, we created all the furniture from lightweight planks to which we glued 2.5 mm-thick veneer and 15 mm-thick high density styrofoam. CNC processing enabled us to produce a high precision product in a short space of time with a small number of people.
