Mail & Coffee

At Kyushu University Ohashi Campus, the mailbox room used by faculty was renovated as “Mail & Coffee” in autumn 2018. It was designed to not just be a space to receive postal items, but also a place for faculty to interact, where fellow faculty can have casual conversations and simple meetings while drinking coffee.
In this renovation, a space was created by reusing and upcycling with Goal 12 “responsible consumption and production” of SDGs, the sustainable development goals, and activities for SDGs were also undertaken on campus.

The furniture were reused furniture and lighting equipment that had been originally used on the Kyushu University Hakozaki Campus and were scheduled to be scrapped. Kyushu University Hakozaki Campus was established in 1911 as Kyushu Imperial University, and have been loved by people for more than 100 years, but was relocated to the Kyushu University Ito Campus in the autumn of 2018. In line with this relocation, the furniture that had become unneeded were positioned in “Mail & Coffee” on the Ohashi Campus, and revived in a new space.

Also, the name plates positioned on the door of each mailbox were made using driftwood from Asakura, Fukuoka Prefecture, that suffered from heavy rain in northern Kyushu in July 2017, adding new expressions to doors that looked used.
It takes effort to reuse and conduct maintenance but the life spans of objects will increase, and spin new stories in new places.
