Human Resources that Survive the New Era: A Symposium to Consider the Future of Design x Business x Entrepreneurship
February 14th, 2019(Thursday)
As part of the development of a new graduate school educational program combining design studies and business management with entrepreneurship education, Kyushu University held “Human Resources that will Survive the New Era: A Symposium to Consider the Future of Design x Business”.
At this year’s event, a report was made about the results of the graduate school’s Content Business Producer Education Program (Ciao Program). The symposium also included keynote lectures from leaders of design in the business world and a panel discussion with guest speakers and faculty from Kyushu University. The event was highly successful, with over 100 participants taking part. Mr Tomoya Tanaka of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry explained the increasing importance of the power of design in Japan’s business world from a government position. Representing Matsui Service Consulting, Mr. Takumi Matsui gave a lecture titled Training Human Resources for Outstanding Service Design on realizing outstanding service by understanding design, business, and entrepreneurship from the viewpoint of service. This method involves reformulating targets, aims, and ways of surmounting the hurdles that are bound to come up. It has become a driving force to integrating design, business, and entrepreneurship education.
The second half of the symposium was dedicated to a panel discussion on the theme “What Kind of People do We Need to Educate for the Design Studies and Business Education of the Future?”. From the viewpoints of economics, design studies, and entrepreneurship, the discussion highlighted both common ground and differences around the following: the significance of integrating the three fields; educational ideas for cultivating the leaders of the next generation; cooperation between industry and academia to create new courses at the university. The panel discussion provided opportunities to discover guiding principles for future collaboration.
The symposium also provided information that will be useful in designing new prospective courses for the Graduate School of Design.
