At Kyushu University SDGs design unit, we always try to “think big, start small, move fast,” and try to find and solve problems in real life. Hence, we would like to introduce one such example, “Everyone’s Toilet.”
The 3rd floor of the Administration Building at Kyushu University Ohashi Campus is where the Dean and Secretary-General offices are. As most of the people who worked on this floor were male, hence, there was only a male toilet on this level. However, in recent years, the percentage of women working on this floor has increased, including those who are pregnant. The female employees had to use toilets on other levels, which is inconvenient.
In response to this situation, the Strategic Development Office of the Research Director took the initiative to propose a solution to this problem: “Everyone’s Toilet”. The male toilet was transformed into “Everyone’s Toilet” without renovation. Only the restroom signage was changed, and a lock installed at the door. Hence, anyone can use it. The signage, as shown in the photo, was also designed to include the LGBT community.
“Everyone’s Toilet” was a small step taken to address SDGs goal 5 of “Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls” and goal 11 of “Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable” through the power of design.
There are many challenges and inconveniences around us. When you notice and take action, you will be surprised by the impact of these changes. We hope to bring this awareness to you, and that you can practice it in your everyday life.
