The 3rd Design Seminar Next : The Behavior of Sound Borne From “Music Without A Starting Point” - Don't DJ/YPY Yukemuri Gokudo Tsua 2019

October 28th, 2019

Kyushu University Faculty of Design started “Design Seminar NEXT” in 2019 as a complement to the “Design Fundamental Seminar”. The purpose is to explore new possibilities of design through practical activities. We want to work on the development of a new educational aimed at systematizing design.

We hosted a performance and talk: The Behavior of Dance Borne From “Music Without A Starting Point”, Don’t DJ/YPY Yukemuri Gokudo Tsua 2019, as the third in the Design Seminar NEXT series.

We welcomed DON’T DJ and YPY. DON’T DJ was a musician residing in Berlin who was a foreign exchange student at our Faculty of Design from 2007 to 2008. YPY is a solo project by Koshiro Hino, a player and composer with the bands Goat and Bonanzas. They continued to provoke thought through their performances and talked about sound behavior, which was born from “music within a starting point,” which DON’T DJ refers to as “musique acéphale.”
This event formed part of the national tour by both musicians. Jo Kazuhiro, a faculty member of Kyushu university, joined in their performances and talked. They discussed turntables and cassette tapes as musical instruments, recording, performance, rhythm, and music.

Performance:

Don’t DJ
An individualist artist who continues his prominent presence through polyrhythmic work based on Euclidean rhythm. “Music without a starting point” (which he refers to as musique acéphale) is achieved through a combination of rhythmic patterns which repeat in an extremely minimal fashion. While the audiences listen to a relentless (yet superb) repetition, it becomes unclear where the starting point of the loop is, and each listener will perceive a different pattern within their consciousness.

YPY
Koshiro Hino’s solo project. He is a player and composer for the bands’ Goat and Bonanzas and the large hybrid project “Virginal Variations”. “Virginal Variations” fuses classical instruments with electronic sounds, and the whole-body auditory live performance “GEIST” which combines many speakers with moving performers. He is also active in the ANTIBODIES collective which was founded by Yoko Higashino, and contributes music to the taiko drumming group “Kodo”.
