Call for participants! "Design in Japan / Understanding Japanese Design 2022"

April 13 - June 29, 2022

Launched in 2020, “Design in Japan / Understanding Japanese Design” is a special course in which faculty members from diverse fields of specializations, such as architecture, sound, art, and welfare, introduce Japanese design from their respective points of view. The course provides a rare opportunity to learn about design from a wide variety of disciplines in one place.

This course targets mainly students of the Graduate School of Design and School of Design at Kyushu University. The subject title is “Design in Japan” in the Graduate School, “Understanding Japanese Design” in the School of Design. All lectures are offered in English. International students or students interested in international exchange are welcome to attend. The course is part of the “Program for Understanding Japan” and it is open to students from all schools and graduate schools of Kyushu University.

#3 – 6 Excursion “Japanese Architecture”
We will visit the Chikugo region, located in southern Fukuoka prefecture. Highlights of the day include visits to traditional Japanese architecture such as temples, shrines, and houses designated as nationally important cultural properties.

Only students who have not yet entered Japan will be able to take the entire course online. All lectures will be held in both offline and online modes. Please note the University may decide to shift lectures online-only due to the concerns over the COVID-19 outbreak.

[Participation fee]
For those who participate in the excursion, a participation fee is JPY 1,000. Please make the payment on the first lecture (#1 Introduction).
Make sure you are covered by the “Personal Accident Insurance for Students Pursuing Education and Research (Gakkensai)” before the excursion. You can check your current enrollment status at the Student Affairs Section.
Lunch is not included in the participation fee, so feel free to explore meal options in the area.
The participation fee will be refunded if the excursion is cancelled due to concerns over the COVID-19 outbreak.

First-year graduate students should register for courses through the Student Portal System. All other students are required to fill in the following information and apply to the International Office, Faculty of Design (intl-ofc@design.kyushu-u.ac.jp) by email. If you have any questions or additional requests for us, please feel free to send us together with your application.
