Center for Designed Futures of Kyushu University held a symposium on the theme “Science and Design.
Synopsis:
In recent years, the scope of design has expanded not only to manufacturing, but also to solutions for services and social problems, and the creation of systems. There is a term Evidence-based Design (design based on evidence), that looks at the importance that good design can be explained logically. One of the grounds for this is the understanding of science and the environment. New scientific discoveries can trigger new designs. Sometimes a good design happened which science will reveal the rationale later. Science in design requires both roles. In this symposium, we invite people who are active on the front line in design studies in Japan, to talk about the education and research that are being practised. I would like to think about the possibilities of science in design and its future.
