Design in Japan / Understanding Japanese Design 2021

October 6 to December 22, 2021

Launched in 2020, “Design in Japan / Understanding Japanese Design” is a special course in which faculty members from diverse fields of specializations, such as architecture, sound, art, and welfare, introduce Japanese design from their respective points of view. The course provides a rare opportunity to learn about design from a wide variety of disciplines in one place.

This course targets mainly students of the School of Design and Graduate School of Design at Kyushu University. The subject title is “Design in Japan” in the Graduate School, “Understanding Japanese Design” in the School of Design. All lectures are offered in English. The course is part of the “Program for Understanding Japan” and it is open to students from all schools and graduate schools of Kyushu University.

#5 – 8 Excursion “Japanese Traditions”
We will visit the city of Yanagawa, located in southern Fukuoka prefecture. Highlights of the day include a lecture by urban designer Barrie Shelton on an overview of Japanese spatial design and Yanagawa water-town, a river punting trip, a workshop to make the traditional crafts of Sagemon or a visit to Kamachi ware.
