The second phase of Social Art Lab’s educational exhibition “Shikanoshima Island: Myths of the Sea” is beginning!
Kyushu University Faculty of Design is holding “Shikanoshima Project 2018: Myths of the Sea” at its affiliated Social Art Lab. The project runs during three different periods in 2018. It has been developed in cooperation with the Shikaumi-jinja Shrine and local island residents along with the Fukuoka City Museum, which has been engaged in interdisciplinary studies of the interlinked history of culture and nature of Shikanoshima and the surrounding sea. Through this combination of an artistic approach with scholarly interdisciplinary studies, the project will provide people of all ages with opportunities to learn more about this unique island.
Next is the project’s second phase, which ran from Saturday, October 27th to Saturday, November 24th. This phase included one lecture by Ms. Noriko Hirasawa, a representative of the Shikaumi-jinja Shrine, and another which traced the history of Genkainada trade routes and the cultural echoes of the past that remain in Shikanoshima today (this also included a related tour). There also be hands-on educational workshops: one where participants can learn ancient salt-making techniques and another where participants can listen to underwater sounds.
