Faculty of Design x Faculty of Agriculture Joint Project “Rediscovering Nanocellulose - Potential Alternative Containers” A Presentation of Discoveries

March 2, 2019 (Saturday)

Together, Assistant Professor Naoshige Akita of the Kyushu University, Faculty of Design and Professor Tetsuo Kondo of the Kyushu University, Faculty of Agriculture, are using the new material made from bamboo called “nanocellulose” to implement a design project that explores all possibilities for this material. They proposed new containers made from nanocellulose instead of plastic. This project is implemented as part of the activities of SDGs Design Unit.

What is nanocellulose?
It is cellulose, the main component of bamboo cell walls, scaled down to the nanoleval (cellulose nanofibers). Its qualities include being five times stronger than steel, and weighing 1/5 what steel does. It is expected to be used in construction materials, beauty products, food products, and various other fields.

At the exhibition, we exhibited the process behind the project, and present findings by the students.
